Last night, our young basketballers showed amazing skill and character to become North East Regional Champions at the Vertu Arena in Newcastle!

St. Bede’s represented South Tyneside against the champions from other Districts in our region.

The competition format involved a Champions league - where the top two sides would later qualify for the Grand final. Convincing victories ( 6-2 & 10-0) against St. Mary’s ( North Tyneside), Fellside ( Gateshead) and a draw (0-0) against Ovingham Middle (Northumberland) saw us top our group and qualify strongly for the final.

The ‘Champion of Champions’ final was played in front of a huge crowd at half time in the Eagles match. The St. Bede’s team continued to play expansive, attacking basketball and ran out 4-0 winners after an outstanding performance both offensively and defensively.

On the night there were many excellent young basketballers on show, but the ability of the St. Bede’s players to play as a team was ultimately too much for the other finalists. We scored the most baskets and concede the fewest in the games played. Harvey was the tournament leading scorer, while Sophie was awarded MVP (Most Valuable Player) - 10 years on from when her elder brother Jake (supporting on the night) also lead St. Bede’s to Regional success. Meanwhile, the defence was marshalled superbly by the focused Poppy, while Ralph and Seth worked tirelessly defending, attacking and scoring baskets!

I couldn’t have been prouder of the children for how they showed their wonderful ability and character on a biggest stage. Meanwhile, they were cheered on by amazing family, staff and school community support in Newcastle on a memorable night for St. Bede’s.
