‘When Jesus is asked which is the greatest commandment, the answer is the same in all three of the Gospels in which the question is asked: to love God with all your mind, heart, soul and strength, and to love your neighbour as yourself’.
This call to love is at the heart of the educational mission of every Catholic school. It is a mission that is clearly echoed in the Second Vatican Council which teaches that the purpose of an education that is distinctively Christian is threefold. Its first purpose is to ensure that all pupils understand the faith that gives the school its identity as a Catholic school. The second, is to ensure that all are invited to learn how to worship God in spirit and truth through the prayer and liturgy of the Church. The third, is the formation of all to live in conformity with the pattern of human goodness, truth and justice that we find in Jesus Christ.’

First Holy Communion
In Year 4, children at our school are invited to take part in the Sacraments of Reconciliation and First Holy Communion—important milestones in the journey of faith for every Catholic. While parents play the most vital role in guiding their child through this sacred experience, you’ll be supported every step of the way.
Our school and parish are committed to walking alongside families during this special time. Through our Religious Education curriculum, pupils will explore the life of Jesus, the teachings of the Church, and the significance of the Sacraments, with particular focus on Reconciliation and Holy Communion.
At St Bede’s, we work hand-in-hand with our parish to prepare for these celebrations. The wider parish community also offers opportunities for families to become more involved, helping you connect with others and deepen your shared experience of faith.
There is a meeting on Tuesday 30th September 2025 at 6.30pm in St Bede’s Church Hall to find out more about how we prepare your children to receive these Sacraments. The meeting will be led by Mrs Brown and Mrs Kennedy (Parish Catechists). We’re excited to welcome you and your child as we continue this beautiful journey of faith together. It’s a joy and a privilege to support and nurture their growth, and we can’t wait to see you there!
