Our basketballers were crowned South Tyneside Champions at Sport Central, Newcastle on Friday night.
A well contested semi-final against Stanhope went agonisingly to penalties, after several near misses in normal time. Penalty practice paid off though, as Jude Hill sent us through to the final from the free-throw line!
The final was played at half-time of the Newcastle Eagles match in front of huge crowd, against a talented East Boldon team. However, the St. Bede’s players put in a scintillating team performance; to emphatically win 8-0 as we found our shooting accuracy, combined with our slick team play. Captain Will Watson scored and Jude Hill claimed a memorable Sport Central hat-trick. But it was very much a complete team effort, as we still
have not conceded a basket this season.
During the presentation, it was wonderful to see the team’s smiles as they lifted the Hoops4Health trophy. They will now go on to represent our borough in the North of England Finals.
I couldn’t have been prouder of the players on Friday for their great team play on a big stage. In recent weeks, many Y4 and Y5 children have continued to enjoy playing basketball at lunchtimes, which has helped to raise the team up to such a high level.
Thank you to everyone who supported the basketballers at Sport Central, on a quite brilliant evening!
