Northumberland Tyne & Wear Basketball Finals 2017

Sunday 30th April

Venue – Sport Central, Newcastle

On Sunday afternoon, the St. Bede’s Basketball team took part in the Regional finals at Sport Central in Newcastle. Already South Tyneside Champions, the team were now going to play against the champions of the other boroughs in our region.

Our team had a disappointing opening result, against a physical Ponteland team who managed to beat us by a solitary basket. We came back strongly in this match, and were extremely unlucky to see four shots in the final minute bounce off the rim and out. Seaton Dene played very well against us in the second match, yet we managed to defend resolutely and despite not having a lot of possession, only lost by one basket. Contrastingly, Ponteland went on to lose 10-2 against Seaton in the group stage.

Two narrow defeats were not the ideal start, but we knew we had the ability to bounce back. Indeed I was delighted with the character the team showed in their following three games. Our players went on to play some brilliant team basketball in a wonderful response. St. Bede’s proceeded to beat the champions of Gateshead, North Tyneside and Newcastle with very strong performances.

This meant we had gone from bottom, up to joint second alongside Ponteland- a remarkable turnaround! Personally, I quietly thought we had done enough to qualify for the final ( top two qualify); as we had a superior basket difference to Ponteland. However, it soon emerged that this year the organisers had decided in the event of a points tie it would go to head to head result, rather than the previously used basket difference.

Nevertheless, the children should be delighted with their performances; especially the resilience and character they showed to bounce back and claim third spot. There were over 200 entered teams this year, so to make the Regional finals and claim bronze was an amazing performance! I was extremely proud of all the players for the way in which they trained for the finals, and the determination and skill they all displayed during the tournament.

Finally, I thought it was a remarkable effort by the players, their families and supporters to be at Sport Central on the Sunday of a Bank Holiday weekend. Thank you all so much!
