On Monday afternoon, the football team played in the prestigious Champions Cup event at Mortimer Primary School. The competition included the six champions of each Primary School League; with the aim to discover who was the best of the best.

Our first game was against Westoe Crown, who raced into a two goal lead in the opening minutes. We seemed a little in awe of their Academy players in the first half; but in the second we were the better side and they were indebted to their goalkeeper who pulled off some top saves. Next we played Harton, who went ahead with a wonder strike from distance. However, we quickly equalised and went on to dominate, but couldn’t quite find a winner.

However, by this time we were really playing well and had found our passing game. We went on to beat St. James (3-1) and Cleadon (3-0), before dramatically coming from behind to beat St. Matthew’s (2-1).

We finished a superb second in the Champions League. This competition for ‘Champions’, represented one last glorious effort by this excellent team, who played with great determination and creativity.

The players should be proud of their efforts today and their achievements over the last two seasons. I am sure they will all remember the happy footballing memories they have created together. The team has always shown a fun camaraderie, which has been lovely to witness.

Last season, undeterred by their young age (Y4 and Y5 players) they managed a unique achievement of winning the Snowball League. They impressively repeated the feat this season, by winning every single league game. Despite their success, they always displayed a humility while they took any cup defeats respectfully. The team’s character to keep going to the end was epitomised in their final game, a grandstand finale scoring a last kick of the game winner.

The past two seasons have been completely captivating and wholly enjoyable to the end. Thank you for your commitment and the brilliant support of your parents and families.
